Phil Fischer with Jesus Lives – A Devotion on “Rain”
Rain can be a blessing or a curse.
Gardens need rain to produce crops but heavy rains will damage a harvest. Rain is good for wheat except when it is time to harvest. A heavy downpour can ruin a crop that is ready to pick. Rain reminds us of God’s Sovereignty. Rain is a sign of God’s active interaction with man through the process of nature.
“Who covers the heavens with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow on the mountains.” Psalm 147:8 (NKJV)
“Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are You not He, O Lord our God? Therefore, we will wait for You, since You have made all these.” Jeremiah 14:22 (NKJV)
“He gives rain on the earth and sends waters on the fields.” Job 5:10 (NKJV)
What does rain symbolize? A few ideas that come to mind are unhappiness, rebirth or renewal, and cleansing. In the days of Noah, God was sorry He created man because evil and wickedness were everywhere. He decided to destroy every man and beast from the earth. Thankfully, Noah found grace in the eyes of God and through him, mankind prevailed. God allowed a cleansing to establish a fresh start.
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” Genesis 6: 5-8 (NKJV)
If you’ve ever lived in a desert location, you understand the relief that comes from a rainstorm. Clouds appear on the horizon and there is an anticipation for cooler temperatures. We can look out to the distance and watch a front approach. An excitement fills the senses thanks to the anticipation of the respite soon to come.
The sun is a symbol of truth and light. God is light. Rain is the only way to clear clouds from the sky. Thus, rain is essential when it comes to finding our way to truth. You may be in the midst of a difficult trial or storm. Hang on! The tears and frustration you are experiencing could be a holy cleansing from God. Sanctification is not an easy process but it’s necessary if we are to be transformed into the image of Christ. There is a silver lining in every dark raincloud and a lesson to be learned while weathering spiritual battles. Rain clears away darkness and distractions. Just as we are refined in the refiner’s fire, we are polished and transformed during storms of grace.
May God create a garden of His unfailing love inside your heart. Seek the Lord day and night and pray that He showers His righteousness upon you and those you love. May the rain in your life be a blessing, not a curse.
“Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until He comes and showers His righteousness on you.” Hosea 10:12 (NIV)
