Phil Fischer with Jesus Lives – a devotion on “Fire”
One day, while Moses was tending the sheep of his father-in-law Jethro, he led the flock near Mount Horeb. There, the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in the midst of a bush. Curious as to why the fire did not consume the bush, he went to take a closer look.
“And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, ‘I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.’” Exodus 3:2-3 (NKJV)
During this encounter, God informs Moses that he is standing on holy ground and instructs him to remove his sandals. He then tells Moses that He has heard Israel’s cries of oppression and has selected Moses to lead them out of bondage. God spoke to Moses through this miraculous burning bush that was not consumed by flames.
Scripture tells us that God is a consuming fire and that He is jealous for us. When we speak of God’s consuming fire, we must picture God with an ardent passion. There are times when we are so filled with the Holy Spirit we experience a burning, passionate outpouring of love for God.
“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” Deuteronomy 4:24 (NIV)
“To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.” Exodus 24:17 (NIV)
Other scriptures speak of God’s holy fire as a tool for refinement. God will often use trials and adversity to build up and test our faith. The heat of God’s consuming fire will purify us.
“That the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ” 1 Peter 1:7 (NKJV)
“I will bring the one-third through the fire, will refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people’; And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ”Zechariah 13:9 (NKJV)
Finally, God knows our frame. He knows that we are but dust and some struggle with anxiety and fear. When we pass through deep waters and walk through flames of fire, He is with us every step of the way. Let us not avoid the consuming fire that pursues us. Instead, let us rejoice in tests He has orchestrated, for they will certainly purify our faith and glorify our God.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.” Isaiah 43:2 (NKJV)
